Two hand-painted boards are held up over the gathering, one carrying the call for the workers of all countries to unite and the other a five-pointed star with a salute above it, the party's initials below and the years 1919 and 1959 either side. Those two years mark forty years of the party, which dates the meeting on its own. The crowd stands on the steps of a modern building.
About this place
The building at Bulevar Mihajla Pupina 25 is known in Novi Sad as the DTD building, after Hidrozavod DTD, which worked there before moving elsewhere. DTD stands for the Danube-Tisa-Danube hydrosystem, proposed by the engineer Nikola Mirkov in 1947 and built between 1957 and 1977, with 960 kilometres of waterways of which 600 are navigable. The building went up in 1954 to a design by the architect Branislav Ristić; its white bulk is among the first sights for travellers entering the city from the Varadin bridge. Vode Vojvodine, the water management company founded in 2002, works there today; its name has replaced the DTD lettering on the side wall, though people in Novi Sad still give directions by the old one. This archive's photograph of 1959 shows a gathering on its front steps under two boards, one calling on the workers of all countries to unite and the other marked SKJ with the years 1919 and 1959.
