Peterwardein, by W. H. Bartlett and J. C. Armytage, hand-coloured
The fortress and the lower town stand on the far bank, seen from the Novi Sad side of the Danube. A paddle steamer lies in the foreground beside a busy commercial riverbank where people sit and stand among barrels, baskets and bundled goods, other craft are out on the water, and a low crossing at the left is consistent with the bridge of boats that joined the two towns. The sheet is signed for its draughtsman and its engraver, W. H. Bartlett and J. C. Armytage, and is hand-coloured.

About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
