The dining room of the Piros Csizma restaurant
A colour view down the length of a restaurant dining room. Heavy dark stained timber beams cross the white ceiling on carved posts, and from them hang large pendant lamps made of overlapping translucent shell discs in a scalloped dome. Tables in rows along both sides are laid with green checked cloths over white, with folded green napkins, flower jugs and ashtrays, and the seats are dark timber benches and chairs upholstered in red. A low dark picket fence divides the room lengthways, with troughs of large leaved pot plants growing above it, and beyond the fence the white wall carries framed panels of painted figures in rustic dress and shelves of decorated plates on carved brackets. At the far end a green curtained window and an arched opening lead to a second room. A waitress stands at a table in the middle of the room, turned to set down a jug of flowers: she wears an embroidered red sleeveless bodice over a white puff sleeved blouse, a white frilled apron over a dark skirt, and boots. A young man in a wine coloured jacket and striped tie sits at the table she is serving. Two young women sit together at a table beyond the fence with glasses of juice before them.
About this place
The Orient was a three storey corner hotel in Grbavica, then the southern edge of Novi Sad. Its name was painted across the shaped gable in two languages at once, Hotel Orient and Orient szálló, with shops along the ground floor and tram wires strung across the street in front. Grbavica made sense for a hotel: the town's first railway station of 1882 stood on its southern boundary, where the Liman market is today, and travellers arrived there until the line was moved north and the old station pulled down. Another postcard in this archive, captioned Petőfi-utca, shows the same corner from further down the street, so the hotel stood on what was then Petőfi street; the catalogue identifies that street with the present Ulica Lasla Gala and records that a Hungarian restaurant, the Piros csizma, later occupied the site.
