About this place
The oldest surviving Orthodox church site in the city core, dating from the 1730s and long known in the town as Nedeljko's church after its founder, the merchant Nedeljko Bogdanović. It was nearly destroyed in the bombardment of June 1849, when all its parish records burned, and was renewed in 1860 with the support of Jovan and Marija Trandafil; it also served the city's Greek and Tsintsar merchants as their prayer church. On 20 September 1913 the sons of Albert Einstein and his Novi Sad-born first wife Mileva Marić were baptised here. The church is protected as a Cultural Monument of Great Significance.
