Ship mill anchored in the Danube off a low plain at Novi Sad
A ship mill lies at anchor in the Danube: a boarded mill house with a shallow gabled roof built on a dark hulled barge, the great wooden paddle wheel carried on a second float alongside and its shaft running through to the stones inside. A small skiff is made fast at the stern. Behind, the far bank is a flat sandy shore and a level plain with a line of trees along the horizon, which puts the mill off the Backa side of the river. Mills like this ground grain on the current itself, and they had gone from the Danube by the middle of the twentieth century.
