Two ship mills and their millers below a Danube village at Novi Sad
Two ship mills lie moored one behind the other in the Danube, each a boarded mill house on a barge hull with a great wooden paddle wheel set between the hull and a narrow outer float. A plank ladder runs up over the roof of the nearer one, and two men stand on its deck, one beside the wheel and one in the doorway of the mill house. Behind them a village of low white houses with steep roofs lies along the bank under wooded slopes, with open pasture and scattered houses on the hill above. Mills of this kind ground grain on the current and needed no works on the bank at all.
