Crowd outside Hermann Löwenberg's glass warehouse
A photographic postcard by Novi Sad photographer József Singer shows a large crowd gathered outside Hermann Löwenberg's glass and porcelain wholesale business on Wheat Square, then known as Žitni trg, Búza tér and in German as Fruchtplatz. The corner premises carry large Hungarian advertising signs for a warehouse selling glass, porcelain and stoneware, with Löwenberg's name prominently displayed above the entrance. Men, women and children fill the pavement and roadway in what appears to be a deliberately assembled group, although the reason for the gathering is not documented. The postcard is dated 21 August 1900. Hermann Löwenberg's business remained active in Novi Sad for decades; later advertisements again place his main glass and porcelain shop at Žitni trg 15.

About this place
The Wheat Square was made at the end of the eighteenth century when the grain market was moved out of the main street, today's Zmaj Jovina, onto a stretch of the town's great bazaar. It runs about 210 metres and stands where the old road north to Temerin and on to Budapest left the town. The square carried the name Zitni trg until 1927, when it was renamed for Princess Zorka; the old name came back during the occupation in the Second World War, after which it became Svetozar Marković Square, and since 2001 it has been named for the benefactor Marija Trandafil. A Turkish caravanserai stood on it from 1748 until the bombardment of 1849, and the buildings that replaced it include the Serbian primary school of 1874, the orphanage endowed by Marija Trandafil in 1912 that now houses Matica srpska, and the craftsmen's hall of 1938. Trams crossed the square from 1911 until 1958.
