1900–1918Wheat Square
The stone cross on the corn market square
A hand coloured card of a broad cobbled square. A tall stone cross on a moulded pedestal stands at the centre of the frame inside a low iron railing, with four lantern standards set at its corners and the figure of Christ carved on the shaft. The cobbles are laid in fanning courses and washed in pinks and greys. To the left a two storey building with round headed ground floor openings closes the square, an ornamental gas lamp on a fluted column standing before it, and a line of low houses runs away behind. To the right a single storey range of shops comes forward under a deep eaves, its doorways open and its signboards lettered above them, with goods set out at the pavement edge. Figures are scattered across the square: women in long skirts and headscarves, a man leading a horse, a group standing at the shopfronts, and two women in dark dress in the right foreground.
About this place
The Wheat Square was made at the end of the eighteenth century when the grain market was moved out of the main street, today's Zmaj Jovina, onto a stretch of the town's great bazaar. It runs about 210 metres and stands where the old road north to Temerin and on to Budapest left the town. The square carried the name Zitni trg until 1927, when it was renamed for Princess Zorka; the old name came back during the occupation in the Second World War, after which it became Svetozar Marković Square, and since 2001 it has been named for the benefactor Marija Trandafil. A Turkish caravanserai stood on it from 1748 until the bombardment of 1849, and the buildings that replaced it include the Serbian primary school of 1874, the orphanage endowed by Marija Trandafil in 1912 that now houses Matica srpska, and the craftsmen's hall of 1938. Trams crossed the square from 1911 until 1958.
