The building at right is the Menrat furniture store named in the title, its side wall painted with the name in three languages, Butorhaz in Hungarian, Meubel-Magasin in French and Mobelhaus in German, all meaning furniture house. A second shop, Jovicsin Ari, is signed beneath it at street level. Awninged shopfronts continue down both sides of the street, with a scattering of pedestrians on the pavement.
About this place
The street running off Liberty Square, named for King Alexander I of Yugoslavia and carrying the name still. The archive's cards look along it toward the spire of the Name of Mary Church, with the tram in the roadway and shop awnings down the left side. Under the occupation of 1941 to 1944 the street carried Adolf Hitler’s name, and the archive’s wartime photograph of it is filed here under that period. Under socialist Yugoslavia the street carried the name Ulica narodnih heroja, which a separate street about 120 m south-west carries today, so a caption using that name has to be dated before it is placed. The pin is the OpenStreetMap line of the street itself.
