1919–1941Banovina Palace
The Danube Banovina Administration Palace along its avenue
The Danube Banovina's modernist administration palace, with its tall stepped tower, stretches along a broad tree lined avenue where pedestrians and a scattering of vehicles pass. A statue crowns the corner building at left. The Danube Banovina existed only from 1929 to 1941, fixing this firmly within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
About this place
The Banovina complex was built between 1936 and 1939 to a modernist design by architect Dragiša Brašovan, as the administrative seat of the Danube Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main palace, clad in white marble from the island of Brač, runs 180 metres long with a 42-metre tower; the adjoining Banski dvor holds the ceremonial halls. Today the complex houses the Government and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and is protected as a cultural monument.
