A colour view taken from beside the track, looking along a curve as a short steam train comes down toward the camera through a cutting. A tall plume of dark smoke stands straight up from the locomotive. Men and boys are riding on the front of the engine and standing on its running plate, several holding leafy branches, and a large printed portrait panel has been lashed across the smokebox. Four passenger carriages follow, their windows crowded with faces and arms, and the train runs out onto an embankment beside a row of houses. A boy in a white shirt runs down the ballast beside the rails and another stands in the foreground with his back to the camera. The embankment falls away to rough grass and a wire fence on the right, and beyond the houses the tower and steep roof of a church stand against a white sky.
About this place
Štrosmajerova is the main street of the Podgrađe, the baroque lower town that sits inside the outworks of the Petrovaradin fortress and is known locally as Gradić. The quarter took shape between 1692 and 1728 and filled with the institutions of a garrison town, and the street climbs from it towards the fortress gates. At number 20 stands the Franciscan church and friary of St George, the oldest church in Petrovaradin, built between 1701 and 1714 on the model of the Jesuit church of Il Gesù in Rome. A railway ran along the street from 1941 until 1962, the last train running on 27 May of that year, and the soot from it blackened the church's white front and the house fronts around it, which is what the photographs of trains in the street record. The name refers to Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the Croatian bishop of Đakovo who died in 1905.
