The caption is in Hungarian and German with no Serbian, which places the card before 1918, and both versions name the building for two functions at once, a tax office and a customs house under one roof. A large leafy tree overhangs the corner of it.
About this place
The tax and customs house was the office where the state collected its money in Novi Sad under Hungarian rule. The two postcards of it in this archive show a two storey corner palace in the eclectic manner, its ground floor rusticated and arcaded, a turret with a bulbous cupola set over the corner, and young trees along the pavement. Both cards name it twice over, Adóhivatal és vámház in Hungarian and Steueramt und Zollamt in German, and one of them names the town three ways at once, Ujvidék, Нови Сад and Neusatz, which is how the place presented itself to visitors before 1918. Neither card gives a date of building or an architect, and nothing further about the house has been traced.
