Manuscript plan of the 1716 battle at Petrovaradin
A hand-drawn and lightly colored map lays out an army's tents and troop columns above a fortified river position, with a German-language key at right and a small wax-seal-like emblem. The sheet is identified as a plan of the battle of Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
