A Dutch Atlas Map of the Battles of Petrovaradin and Slankamen, 1716
A page bound into a larger atlas, the map labelled in Dutch: Het Turkse Leger in Slagorder, the Turkish army in battle order, faces De Keyserlyke Legers, the Imperial armies, across the plain below Peter Waradein. Belgrado is named at the river bend, captioned Griechisch Weissenburg, and a lettered key on a scroll at the right identifies the commanding officers.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
