Coaches on the apron beside the new railway station
A raised view across a broad concrete apron to the long low railway station, its front a white horizontal slab over a dark glazed ground floor and a stone faced wing running away to the left. At the right the concourse rises into the folded sawtooth roof that gives the building its profile. Three single deck coaches in blue and white stand about the apron, one drawn up at the near kerb with a driver and a family beside it, suitcases and bags set down on the concrete at their feet, and two more waiting at marked bays further off beside a tall cluster of floodlights. A long triangle of mown grass with a clipped hedge, a flowerbed and young shrubs divides the apron from the station forecourt, and a few travellers cross it on the path. Cars are parked in rows along the far side.
About this place
The present station, opened on 31 May 1964 to a design by Imre Farkas and Milan Matović, standing north of the centre on the line the railway was moved to as the city grew. Its sawtooth roof recalls the rooflines of Pannonian houses. On 1 November 2024 the concrete canopy above its entrance collapsed, killing 16 people. This is a different building on a different site from the station of 1882, which stood where the Liman market is now. The pin is the OpenStreetMap position of the station building.
