1928Sanatorium Dr Uzelac
Dr Slavko Uzelac Sanatorium
The newly completed private sanatorium of the surgeon Dr Slavko Uzelac stands on the Danube waterfront, its name lettered across the upper facade above broad balconies and a columned entrance. The ground around the building is still unfinished, with construction material and rubble lying about, and a horse and cart stand at right. A Novi Sad newspaper of 1 September 1928 reports that Uzelac's sanatorium had been built that spring near the steamship station, and describes a basement, a ground floor, two upper floors, balconies and a sun terrace, with 30 patient beds and surgical and gynaecological facilities. The building survives at Beogradski kej 7.
About this place
A private sanatorium built between the wars and lettered with its founder's name along a band below the top floor, in Cyrillic and in Latin at once, which is the two-script form the Kingdom used. The one card of it in this archive catches the building new: three storeys on a corner site with a columned porch, deep balconies at the corners and metal-framed windows, the ground around it still builder's rubble and a horse and cart standing in the road. Nothing further about the house or its founder has been traced.
