c. 1932–1941Dr Đura Jovanović House
Dr Đura Jovanović's modernist house
The narrow three-storey façade of a modernist house on Ilije Ognjanovića Street is deliberately asymmetric, with a large rectangular projecting bay, recessed balconies and broad horizontal openings that set it sharply apart from the older building beside it. The central entrance keeps a reduced form of the traditional Pannonian carriage passage, its sides clad in marble. Đorđe Tabaković designed the house in 1932 for the Novi Sad paediatrician Dr Đura Jovanović, known in the city as Kinder Đura, who lived here and ran his practice in the building. Jovanović became the first specialist in children's medicine in Vojvodina and had a leading part in establishing organised paediatric care and the children's hospital in Novi Sad. University of Novi Sad architectural material reproduces this same photograph and captions it Stambena zgrada, Ilije Ognjanovića 9. The house survives at that address.
About this place
A narrow three-storey modernist house at Ilije Ognjanovića 9, designed by Đorđe Tabaković in 1932 for the Novi Sad paediatrician Dr Đura Jovanović, known in the city as Kinder Đura. Its facade is deliberately asymmetric, with a rectangular projecting bay, offset balconies and broad horizontal openings, and the central entrance keeps a reduced form of the traditional Pannonian carriage passage. University of Novi Sad architectural material treats it as one of Tabaković's most advanced early Novi Sad works. Jovanović lived in the house and ran his practice there; he became the first specialist in children's medicine in Vojvodina and had a leading part in establishing organised paediatric care and the children's hospital in Novi Sad. The building survives at the same address. It does not appear in the current list of individually registered Novi Sad cultural monuments, and number 9 falls outside the Ilije Ognjanovića 1 to 5 portion of the separately listed Blok Mihajla Pupina i Ilije Ognjanovića preliminary-protection ensemble.
