The Battle of Petrovaradin, from Count Ferenc Széchényi's Library
Infantry fire in ranked lines through dense clouds of gunsmoke beneath flags marked with a cross emblem, in an engraving titled The Battle at Petervardein. A circular stamp in the corner records that this sheet once belonged to the library of Count Ferenc Szechenyi, the collection that became the founding core of Hungary's national library.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
