Two Ship Mills Moored off a Village Bank
Two ship mills lie moored in line off a village bank, one with its milling house closed and roofed, the other an open timber frame with the wheel shaft carried between the hulls. Men stand on both decks. Behind them the village runs along the shore in low houses, with a white church tower on the wooded rise above and gardens dropping to the water. Floating mills of this kind ground the grain of the riverside villages, and they had all but gone from the Danube by the middle of the twentieth century.
