12 August 1904Danube Park
Punts on the water, the spire beyond
Three punts drawn up on still water with men in straw hats aboard, one poling and one at the oars, and a line of reeds along the near bank. Across the water the town shows as a low white terrace under trees with the spire of the Church of the Name of Mary and a second tower rising behind it. The sender has written the date and message straight across the picture, the back being reserved for the address.
About this place
The city's central park was laid out in 1895 on a swampy former branch of the Danube known as the Liman, until then a reedbed of willows, mosquitoes and frogs. Its small lake keeps an island named Erzsébet in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, assassinated in 1898. The fountain sculpture of a nymph, the Girl with the Horn of Plenty by Đorđe Jovanović, was installed in 1912, and later decades added monuments to the poets Đura Jakšić (1982) and Miroslav Antić (1992). Covering four hectares with some 760 trees, the park is protected as a Monument of Nature.
