The publisher's imprint is in German and gives J. Singer his court photographer's title, which places the card in the Austro-Hungarian years and shows it was made by a photographer working in the town. Flat-bottomed punts are being poled across a wide backwater, passengers sitting amidships, and a horse is worked on the bank.
About this place
The city's central park was laid out in 1895 on a swampy former branch of the Danube known as the Liman, until then a reedbed of willows, mosquitoes and frogs. Its small lake keeps an island named Erzsébet in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, assassinated in 1898. The fountain sculpture of a nymph, the Girl with the Horn of Plenty by Đorđe Jovanović, was installed in 1912, and later decades added monuments to the poets Đura Jakšić (1982) and Miroslav Antić (1992). Covering four hectares with some 760 trees, the park is protected as a Monument of Nature.
