A Calvary is a Catholic devotional structure, an arcaded chapel with an outside stair climbing to the platform where three crosses stand, closing a Way of the Cross. Novi Sad had one on what was then the western edge of the city, near the point where Futoški put meets Cara Dušana, a short walk from the Roman Catholic cemetery laid out in 1860 and from the public hospital begun in 1907; the note attached to the photograph in this archive is the source for that siting, and no published account of the structure has been traced. It is gone today. Petrovaradin kept a Calvary of its own on the far bank, at the end of an old Way of the Cross that started at the church of Saint Roch in Novi Majur and finished at an underground chapel standing for the tomb; the middle of its three crosses was pulled down in the 1990s and the two others are still there, damaged.
