1896–1918Elisabeth Square
Elizabeth Square, a Woman in a Wide Hat Boards the Tram
Two electric trams stand at a stop in Erzsébet tér, their trolley poles connected to overhead wires. A woman in a wide hat and other passengers wait to board while pedestrians and a cyclist cross the square. Multi-story buildings with tiled roofs and shopfronts line both sides of the street. The caption is printed in Hungarian and German only. The electrified line places the scene in the last years of Austro-Hungarian rule in the city.
About this place
A square distinct from the main square. Habsburg-era cards use the name Erzsebet for both a square and a hotel, which makes the two easy to confuse. The main post office stood on it, and cards caption the pair together as Erzsebet-ter a fopostaval, Elizabeth Square with the main post office. The higher commercial school stood on it too. Erzsebet ter became Wilson Square and is today Trg mladenaca. The Serbian name Trg Marije Trandafil belongs to a different square 678 m north-east.
