Katolička porta is the short pedestrian lane that runs round the Roman Catholic church of the Name of Mary, off Trg slobode in the middle of Novi Sad. A porta is a church precinct, and the name is simply what the ground was: the yard belonging to the parish. At number 3 stands the Roman Catholic parish house, built in 1808 to plans by Georg Effinger in the manner of the passage from baroque to classicism, a single storey building whose tall hipped roof with two heavy chimneys is close to the only one of its kind to survive the burning of the town in 1849. The parish house is protected as a cultural monument of great importance; its ground floor rooms are vaulted and hold the church offices and archive, and the hall above has a plaster-worked ceiling.
