Carriages line up before a long two-storey hotel, shopfronts and awnings filling its ground floor and a woman with a pram passing among cloaked figures on the pavement. The building carries two names for the same woman: Hôtel zur Kaiserin Elisabeth in German at the top of the card and Erzsébet királyné szálloda, Queen Elizabeth's hotel, in Hungarian at the bottom, empress on one side of the border and queen on the other.
About this place
The Queen Mary was a single storey hotel built in the classicist manner, with a summer garden that the archive photographed in 1935. This archive's catalogue records that it went up in 1854 for its owner Johann Eigler and first traded under the name Elisabeth, and that it was renamed the Queen Mary Hotel on 9 May 1922, after Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia. That change of sign is the ordinary pattern in Novi Sad after 1918, when Habsburg names on streets, squares and businesses gave way to those of the new royal house. Nothing further about the building has been traced beyond the archive's own record.
