About this place
Queen Mary Boulevard was cut through the eastern edge of the old town in 1928 as the approach to the new Prince Tomislav bridge, and it is the street now called Bulevar Mihajla Pupina. Making it meant clearing the ground between the centre and the river: the church of St John Nepomuk, which stood at Brukšanac, the small work that had guarded the pontoon bridge, was pulled down for it. The boulevard took its name from Queen Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I, and lost it after the Second World War, when it was renamed for the physicist Mihajlo Pupin. It opened the line along which the city finally reached the Danube.
