Greetings from Novi Sad: City Hall, Cathedral and Banovina Palace
A souvenir card captioned Greetings from Ujvidek with five views arranged around a central strip. City Hall stands beside the Holy Trinity column at top left, and a wing of the Banovina Palace appears at top right. The center strip shows the Cathedral of the Name of Mary from above, looking down the street it faces. The lower panels show a curved corner building and another street where a tram passes the Cathedral's spire. The finished Banovina Palace dates the card after 1939, and the caption is Hungarian only.
About this place
The Banovina complex was built between 1936 and 1939 to a modernist design by architect Dragiša Brašovan, as the administrative seat of the Danube Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main palace, clad in white marble from the island of Brač, runs 180 metres long with a 42-metre tower; the adjoining Banski dvor holds the ceremonial halls. Today the complex houses the Government and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and is protected as a cultural monument.
