1941–1945Banovina Palace
The Banovina Palace, Novi Sad, with Its Tower and Statued Neighbor
The Banovina Palace's long curved wing and its slender ribbed tower stand together with a neighboring rounded building topped by a seated allegorical statue, seen across a plaza with a small fountain. A woman with a pram crosses the foreground. The card carries no caption. The view brings together several buildings that appear separately on other cards. The Banovina Palace was completed in 1939, which sets the earliest possible date.
About this place
The Banovina complex was built between 1936 and 1939 to a modernist design by architect Dragiša Brašovan, as the administrative seat of the Danube Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main palace, clad in white marble from the island of Brač, runs 180 metres long with a 42-metre tower; the adjoining Banski dvor holds the ceremonial halls. Today the complex houses the Government and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and is protected as a cultural monument.
