A long block of two storeys in the classical manner, built in 1854 for Johann Eigler and run as the Elizabeth Hotel. Shops fill the whole ground floor behind a line of bare trees, a rank of horse cabs stands along the kerb in front of them, and a well head and figures in long coats occupy the open ground to the right. The Dunđerski Theatre went up in the hotel's courtyard between 1892 and 1895, together with a generating set that lit much of the city centre.
About this place
The Queen Mary was a single storey hotel built in the classicist manner, with a summer garden that the archive photographed in 1935. This archive's catalogue records that it went up in 1854 for its owner Johann Eigler and first traded under the name Elisabeth, and that it was renamed the Queen Mary Hotel on 9 May 1922, after Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia. That change of sign is the ordinary pattern in Novi Sad after 1918, when Habsburg names on streets, squares and businesses gave way to those of the new royal house. Nothing further about the building has been traced beyond the archive's own record.
