Over the old quarter to the faculties
A high view across the tiled roofs, yards and outbuildings of a low old quarter, a chimney smoking among them and bare trees between the houses. Beyond, across open ground and a road, the long modernist blocks of the university faculties stand against the sky.
About this place
Liman is a district on the Danube bank south of the old town of Novi Sad. Its name is a Greek word for a bay or harbour that reached Serbian through Turkish, used along the Danube for a still backwater where the current slackens; two limans once lay here, the small one on the ground of today's city centre and the great one running from the Futog forest across to Grbavica and Stari Grad, marshy and sandy well into the 20th century. Drainage began in 1922, when the city sold plots off cheaply for housing, and between 1945 and 1955 the ground was raised with sand and driven with deep piles so that it would carry buildings. The district was then laid out in numbered sections, Liman I to IV, with the campus of the University of Novi Sad on Liman I.
