A red cross is set in relief in the attic panel over the middle of the curved colonnade, and it is the only device the building carries. Six giant columns stand under an entablature with a frieze of paterae, above a balustraded parapet at first-floor level. The ground across the road has been freshly dug in rows and young trees are staked along the paths, so the setting was still being laid out when this was taken.
About this place
The Health Centre in Novi Sad was built in 1923 to a design by Jurij Nikolajevič Šreter, a Russian émigré military engineer who was working in the city in those years. He drew the Officers' House on the Belgrade Quay at the same period, and the two buildings share a classicist manner; this archive's catalogue describes the Health Centre as being in the spirit of Russian classicism. Postcards of it circulate with dates of 1923 and 1926.
