1941-1944Hotel Queen Mary
Elevated View of a Novi Sad Shopping Street, an Awning Lettered for a Hotel
Looking down a broad trading street from an upper window, with a double tram track and a crossover in the roadway and shopfronts running the length of both sides. A hotel gateway on the near corner carries the sign SZALLODA, the script fascia of a shop named Kiszlity stands beside it and the grocery chain Meinl Gyula next along. A crowd has gathered around a canopied handcart in the middle of the street and a columnar advertising pillar stands on the pavement. The saloon cars and the dress put it in the occupation years.
About this place
The Queen Mary was a single storey hotel built in the classicist manner, with a summer garden that the archive photographed in 1935. This archive's catalogue records that it went up in 1854 for its owner Johann Eigler and first traded under the name Elisabeth, and that it was renamed the Queen Mary Hotel on 9 May 1922, after Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia. That change of sign is the ordinary pattern in Novi Sad after 1918, when Habsburg names on streets, squares and businesses gave way to those of the new royal house. Nothing further about the building has been traced beyond the archive's own record.
