Uspenska Church and its parish house
The Baroque western bell tower of Uspenska Church, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, rises behind a separate one-storey building that fills most of the foreground. That building is not the church nave: its rectangular windows, plain facade and roofline all differ from the surviving nave with its tall arched windows and articulated Baroque front. Historical accounts place the Uspenska parish house along the southern side of the church, record that its replacement was built in 1906 and 1907, and that it was demolished in 1975 or 1976 in the redevelopment that produced the Serbian National Theatre. The position and the architectural form together point to the foreground building being that parish house. A pedestrian, bare trees, a narrow street and a lamp bracketed from a wall complete the view.
About this place
The Serbian Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, built between 1765 and 1774 and reaching its present appearance around 1776, with a Baroque western bell tower. A parish house stood immediately along its southern side: the replacement building went up in 1906 and 1907, was confiscated in 1968 and was demolished in 1975 or 1976 during the redevelopment that produced the Serbian National Theatre. Address sources for the church disagree, the city heritage register recording Uspenska 12, the Tourism Organization of Vojvodina giving Uspenska 2 and current tourism material using Pozorišni trg, so no house number is asserted.
