1941Banovina Palace
A Ceremonial Reception at the Banovina Palace, Novi Sad, 1941
A crowd lines the street before the Banovina Palace, its balcony hung with bunting and flanked by flags. Girls in coats and berets hold flowers, waiting in a row before ranks of soldiers and officials, while a soldier in a steel helmet walks past in the foreground and a man crouches with a camera. The donor's caption places this on Horthy Miklos Boulevard, today Bulevar Mihajla Pupina, before the Banovina Palace.
About this place
The Banovina complex was built between 1936 and 1939 to a modernist design by architect Dragiša Brašovan, as the administrative seat of the Danube Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main palace, clad in white marble from the island of Brač, runs 180 metres long with a 42-metre tower; the adjoining Banski dvor holds the ceremonial halls. Today the complex houses the Government and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and is protected as a cultural monument.
