A Modern Government Building, a Flag on Its Roof, Novi Sad
A photographic postcard shows a monumental modern building with a colonnaded entrance and a flag on its flat roof, a rounded sedan parked at the curb and two men standing beneath the columns. A second, longer wing with a row of oval windows extends to the right.
About this place
The Banovina complex was built between 1936 and 1939 to a modernist design by architect Dragiša Brašovan, as the administrative seat of the Danube Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main palace, clad in white marble from the island of Brač, runs 180 metres long with a 42-metre tower; the adjoining Banski dvor holds the ceremonial halls. Today the complex houses the Government and the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and is protected as a cultural monument.
