The hotel on the square, on a card captioned in Cyrillic and Latin. The building runs two storeys under one long roof, with its own name lettered across the front above the first floor as ХОТЕЛ КРАЉИЦА МАРИЈА, shops and an awning along the ground floor and a carriage arch at the centre. Horse cabs wait at the kerb on the left, soldiers in greatcoats and a boy cross the open square in the foreground, and an ornate lamp standard stands at the right. The building had opened in 1854 as the Elisabeth, built for Johann Eigler, and took the name Queen Mary on 9 May 1922.
About this place
The Queen Mary was a single storey hotel built in the classicist manner, with a summer garden that the archive photographed in 1935. This archive's catalogue records that it went up in 1854 for its owner Johann Eigler and first traded under the name Elisabeth, and that it was renamed the Queen Mary Hotel on 9 May 1922, after Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia. That change of sign is the ordinary pattern in Novi Sad after 1918, when Habsburg names on streets, squares and businesses gave way to those of the new royal house. Nothing further about the building has been traced beyond the archive's own record.
