A tall blank pylon of rendered concrete with a rounded head stands at the corner carrying a large circular emblem near its top. From it a long low wall runs back along the street, pierced by further roundels, with the north lit sawtooth roofs of the works ranged behind and a factory chimney swelling into a bulge near its top. Newly planted saplings in tree guards line the pavement, telegraph poles stand along the road and a car waits in the distance.
About this place
The Albus soap works, on Stevana Musića street. Its hall of 1937, by the engineer Kaćanski, was among the clearest pieces of modernist factory architecture in the city: a tall blank pylon at the corner carrying a circular emblem, a long low wall pierced by roundels, and north-lit sawtooth roofs behind. The chimney swelled into a bulge near the top, a filter for the coarser particles in the smoke; the only other chimney like it in Novi Sad stood at the Novkabel works and was demolished by an army unit at the city's request in 1986. The 1937 hall was damaged beyond repair in the bombing of 1944 and the halls behind it were only partly rebuilt after the war, never again in that form. The firm's mark was a bell, which appears on its wrappers, on its advertising and on a rooftop sign that stood for years above the Merchant Youths' Home in the city centre. The pin is the OpenStreetMap line of Stevana Musića street; the works' own footprint has not been established.
