Numerous parked and moving cars line this stretch of the street, together with a tram, a more motorised scene than the older Kossuth Lajos utca views of the same street under its earlier name. A stepped modernist building with a cantilevered upper storey stands at centre, with awninged shops continuing along both sides. The heading reads НОВИ САД, Novi Sad, and Кр. Александра улица, Kr. Aleksandra ulica, King Alexander Street, in Serbian only.
About this place
The street running off Liberty Square, named for King Alexander I of Yugoslavia and carrying the name still. The archive's cards look along it toward the spire of the Name of Mary Church, with the tram in the roadway and shop awnings down the left side. Under the occupation of 1941 to 1944 the street carried Adolf Hitler’s name, and the archive’s wartime photograph of it is filed here under that period. Under socialist Yugoslavia the street carried the name Ulica narodnih heroja, which a separate street about 120 m south-west carries today, so a caption using that name has to be dated before it is placed. The pin is the OpenStreetMap line of the street itself.
