A high view along a wide boulevard running straight to the horizon, blocks of flats of ten and more storeys standing on both sides with lower commercial buildings between them and cars parked in rows along the service roads. Young trees line the central reservation, the city spreads away on either side into haze and a low ridge closes the distance.
About this place
Liberation Boulevard, called in Novi Sad simply the Bulevar, runs from the railway station in the north of the city to the Liberty Bridge on the Danube. It was built in stages from 1962 to the late 1970s, cutting through a district of mostly old houses that had grown up in the 19th century, and the new railway station at its northern end opened on 31 May 1964. Until 1991 it carried the name Boulevard of 23 October, for 23 October 1944, the day units of the Novi Sad Detachment and the 7th Vojvodina Strike Brigade entered the city at its liberation. With six traffic lanes in two carriageways it is today the main traffic and business street of the city, and its name also stands for the informal district along it. This archive's photograph from the 1970s looks south along it from high above its northern end, toward the low ridge of Fruška Gora.
