about 1900–1918Honvéd Barracks
Troops drawn up along the front of the honved barracks
A long two storey barrack range runs away from the left foreground into the distance, its two floors of round headed windows set between plain pilasters under a continuous eaves, with a taller centre pavilion carrying a lettered panel and a small balcony. A line of young trees stands along the front. Drawn up in the roadway beside the building, a great column of infantry stretches from the near corner into the far distance, the men in dark uniform and peaked caps, formed in ranks and standing at ease, with officers and a few figures in lighter clothing among them. A mounted officer sits his horse in the right middle distance, apart from the column. The road is unmade earth. Beyond the barracks the ground opens out and a church tower and low roofs show on the skyline at the right, with telegraph poles running along the verge.
About this place
The barracks of the Honvéd, the Hungarian territorial army, built in 1894 and 1895 in Futoška street by the Novi Sad contractor Imre Kicveger. It was one of two barracks complexes the city put up in the 1890s on a single loan of 430,000 forints, having decided that renting private houses to quarter troops was costing more than building would. The names changed with the politics: Archduke Joseph under Austria-Hungary, King Alexander I in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Marshal Tito afterwards, and Arčibald Rajs today. A building of 850 square metres was added behind it in 1947 for a military school, to a design by Đorđe Tabaković.
It is a separate complex from the infantry barracks of 1895 that carried the name of King Peter I, which stood on the other side of the town and has its own entry here. The Honvéd was Hungary's territorial force and the Imperial and Royal infantry the common army of the monarchy.
