About this place
This is a roadside inn on the edge of Novi Sad, photographed for a postcard captioned in Hungarian, Ujvidék. Magyar Király szálló, the Hungarian King inn. It was a single storey house on a corner plot with a long low front and a shallow roof, standing on an unmade street; the board on the corner names the trade in two languages, vendégfogadó above and Gasthof below, so it served a mixed Hungarian and German custom. A Hungarian tricolour flies from the roof and an inset portrait in the corner of the card shows the proprietor, Gyula Müller. The Hungarian-only caption and the flag place the card before 1918, and the open tourer standing outside among the bicycles suggests the years just before the First World War. Nothing further about the house has been traced, and its exact site is not established.
