A Young Man by the Danube, Petrovaradin Fortress Behind, 1943
A young man in a peaked cap with a badge and a dark jacket and tie stands at the water's edge, one hand in his pocket, with Petrovaradin Fortress reflected in the still Danube behind him. The clock tower and long barracks range of the fortress are visible across the water. The source dates the photograph to 1943.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
