The bay is numbered twice over, on a square plate high on its post and again on a board lower down, both reading 9. The buses are two-tone, a light upper panel over a dark skirt, with roller destination boxes above their windscreens, and tubular steel rails channel the queue across the setts. Behind them stands a two-storey house with a shaped gable and roof dormers, and a street lamp is carried out over the stand on a long curved arm.
About this place
The fish market keeps its own small square on Trg republike, at the point where the old centre of Novi Sad runs into Podbara, with Miloša Bajića and Žarka Vasiljevića streets on its other sides. The ground here was low and wet before the town spread over it: an account of the bishop's palace describes it facing a stagnant arm of the Danube in the direction of the present fish market, and complains of the stench and the noise of frogs. The photograph in this archive was taken in 1959, with the square dug up and new blocks of flats standing behind it, during the rebuilding that gave this edge of the centre its present form.
