The curved corner building, capped with a reclining sculptural figure on its roofline, is the Merchant Youths' Home named in the title, matching the same building seen in the five-view Horthy Miklos Avenue card. Parked bicycles and a car stand at the kerb below, with a cyclist riding past and the avenue's other apartment blocks receding to the right.
About this place
Queen Mary Boulevard was cut through the eastern edge of the old town in 1928 as the approach to the new Prince Tomislav bridge, and it is the street now called Bulevar Mihajla Pupina. Making it meant clearing the ground between the centre and the river: the church of St John Nepomuk, which stood at Brukšanac, the small work that had guarded the pontoon bridge, was pulled down for it. The boulevard took its name from Queen Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I, and lost it after the Second World War, when it was renamed for the physicist Mihajlo Pupin. It opened the line along which the city finally reached the Danube.
