# Old Matica Srpska House

Also called: Stara zgrada Matice srpske, A Matica srpska régi háza, Altes Haus der Matica srpska.

From 1888 to 1928 Matica srpska, the Serbian cultural society, had its seat in a house on the south-eastern side of the main square, today Trg slobode. In November 1869 the society bought the house of Josif Gilming on the market place, but let it out for years and moved in only in 1888. It had one upper floor over a row of shops behind a richly decorated historicist front; a drugstore traded below, and upstairs were a hall, works by old painters and a library. In 1928 Matica moved to the Marija Trandafil building, and that year Modene street was cut through this side of the square beside the house. It was pulled down in 1950 to widen the street, and works on a garage under Modene street uncovered its remains in 2022; the Uzor department store built on the ground still stands, put to other uses. This archive's photographs and postcards show МАТИЦА СРПСКА on its roofline from before 1892 to 1940.
