# Church of the Nativity of the Virgin

Also called: Crkva Rođenja Presvete Bogorodice, Szerb ortodox Kisboldogasszony-templom, Serbisch-orthodoxe Kirche Mariä Geburt.

The Serbian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin stands at Karađorđeva 19 in Sremska Kamenica. It replaced an earlier church of the Presentation of the Virgin; its founder was Živan Crnogorac, archpriest of Sremski Karlovci. The heritage register dates it to 1737-1758 and describes traditional Serbian church building with Baroque elements: a single nave, a five-sided apse, and a dome on a ten-sided drum carried by four free-standing piers, the brick and stone walls banded by a double frieze of blind arcades. A three-storey stone bell tower with a Baroque cap was added to the west front in the middle of the eighteenth century. Jov Vasilijevič and Vasilije Ostojić painted the first iconostasis in 1753; Marko Vujatović carved the altar screen in 1797, and Stefan Gavrilović painted the iconostasis in 1802. The church has been protected since 1949 and is a cultural monument of great importance. This archive's postcards and photographs show the clock tower and the dome over the village roofs.
