# Iron Man Palace

Also called: Palata Gvozdeni čovek, Vasember-ház, Palais Eiserner Mann.

The Iron Man palace stands at Njegoševa 2, closing the corner of Liberty Square beside the Name of Mary Church. The Roman Catholic parish had it built in 1908 and 1909 as a Secession block of flats and shops, to plans by the Budapest architect Károly Kovács working with Béla Pekló. It takes its name from the armoured warrior with a halberd in his right hand who stands in a niche under a small cupola on the corner. The figure came from the older house of the same name on this site, which was adapted in 1846 for the town magistrate and burned in the bombardment of 1849. From 1913 the building held the Dornšteter patisserie; after its owner died in 1944 it passed to the state and traded as Moskva, then as Zagreb, the name on a shop sign in this archive's photograph, and since the 1990s as Atina. The facades and the figure were restored in 2004.
