# Headquarters of the First Army District Command

Also called: Štab Komande Prve armijske oblasti, Első Hadseregkerületi Parancsnokság székháza, Hauptquartier des Kommandos des Ersten Armeebezirks.

This building on Trg republike, at the corner of Žarka Vasiljevića street, went up between 1923 and 1925 for the Serbian Cooperative Bank, to a design drawn in Vienna in 1922 by Emil Hoppe and Otto Schönthal, pupils of Otto Wagner; Daka Popović of Novi Sad built it and later revised the design. Its late Secession facades with rationalist touches carry monumental pilasters, ornamental attics and a massive round-arched carriage gate. In 1926 the Ministry of the Army and Navy bought it for the Command of the First Army District, the use named in the caption of this archive's photograph, taken before the entrances on the square were walled up. During the occupation of 1941 to 1944 it held the prison known as Armija, where members of the resistance were tortured. After the war it became the garrison command, and the complex at Dunavska 33 now houses the command of the First Brigade of the Land Forces.
