# Health Centre

Also called: Dom zdravlja, Egészségház, Gesundheitszentrum.

The Health Centre in Novi Sad was built in 1923 to a design by Jurij Nikolajevič Šreter, a Russian émigré military engineer who was working in the city in those years. He drew the Officers' House on the Belgrade Quay at the same period, and the two buildings share a classicist manner; this archive's catalogue describes the Health Centre as being in the spirit of Russian classicism. Postcards of it circulate with dates of 1923 and 1926. The building was begun in 1923 and finished about two years later, among the first put up on the reclaimed ground of Mali Liman after the flood terrain along the Danube was filled in, and it has never changed use. Konstantin Petrovič Parizo de la Valet worked with Šreter on it and on the Officers' House; the two were Russian émigré designers whose work in the city drew on the classicism of the cities they had left. Six massive Ionic columns rise through the first and second floors, and the composition has been described as a reduced replica of the Senate and Synod in St Petersburg. Some sources give the architect's forename as Georgije rather than Jurij. The facade was restored in 2013 and the building is protected by the city's institute for the preservation of monuments.
