# The first self-service shop in Novi Sad

A low single-storey shop pavilion stands on a street corner, its glazed front set back under a slender flat canopy on thin posts, a band of high windows above it and a blank white flank to the left pierced by a small grid of narrow openings. Tall poplars rise behind it, young trees line the pavement, a bicycle leans on a pole at the kerb and a few figures stand under the canopy. A block of flats with balconies rises beyond. This is the first self-service shop in Novi Sad, at the corner of Maksima Gorkog and Stražilovska streets, designed by the architects Milena and Sibin Đorđević: shoppers took the goods from the shelves themselves and met a sales assistant only at the till by the exit. It was later pulled down, and a new court building stands on the site today.
